For many Newcastle fans the happiness they felt from their fifth-round victory over West Brom was very short-lived as the club drew Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final.

The Citizens have been excellent in domestic competition recently, winning five of the last seven League Cup competitions as well as last year’s FA Cup, demolishing Watford 6-0 in the final.

However, City have still shown signs of vulnerability this term, losing six league games and only narrowly beating Championship Sheffield Wednesday in the previous round.

Added to that, home advantage could help the Magpies significantly, and an intense atmosphere could make life difficult for the visitors, and that may be why some fans are feeling optimistic.

That is just one side of the reaction to the news, however, as many other supporters are frustrated that Newcastle have drawn the highest-placed team left in the competition, and would have therefore preferred any other opponent.

Newcastle may have drawn with Pep Guardiola’s side this season but fans are still expressing negativity about the team’s chances, which may not be surprising since the north-east outfit have won just one of their last 10 league games.
